Starting golf lessons is a brilliant step – whether you’re reigniting an old interest or trying something entirely new. One of the most common questions we hear from women heading to their first session is: “What should I wear?” Don’t worry – you don’t need a wardrobe overhaul. The key is to feel comfortable, confident, and appropriately dressed without any fuss.

Start with Comfort and Practicality

Golf is a sport that involves movement – twisting, turning, walking, and standing. Your clothing should support all that without pinching or riding up. Aim for stretchy, breathable fabrics like performance polos, light jumpers, or moisture-wicking tops. A good pair of well-fitting trousers, capris, or a golf skort is ideal.

Many golf clubs have a relaxed dress code for lessons, especially at driving ranges or practice areas, but it’s always good to check. If in doubt, avoid jeans and opt for athletic-style bottoms or chinos.

Footwear: Grip Over Glamour

You don’t need golf shoes on day one – a pair of supportive trainers with a decent grip will do just fine. If you stick with it, investing in a pair of lightweight spikeless golf shoes will improve stability and comfort on the course. Look for something waterproof if you’re braving the great British weather!

Layer Up and Be Weather-Wise

British weather is famously unpredictable, so layering is your friend. A light gilet or zip-up jacket works well and can be taken off as you warm up. Don’t forget a visor or cap for sunnier days – not just for shade, but for a dash of golfer’s flair.

Relax, You Belong Here

It’s natural to feel a bit nervous at your first lesson – especially about what to wear. But remember, golf is about enjoyment, and the community is more welcoming than you might expect. No one expects perfection – just a willingness to learn and have fun. Wear what makes you feel confident and able to move freely, and you’ll be off to a great start.

And if you’re still unsure? Just ask your instructor or the club – they’ll be happy to guide you.
