A £20 million transformation has turned the former Dummer site into one of Hampshire’s standout golfing destinations. Jane Lees gives her verdict
In 2021, Basingstoke Golf Club relocated from its original parkland site north of the M3 to the larger, chalk-based Dummer course on the south side. Since then, the club has undergone an ambitious £20 million transformation, with a brand-new clubhouse, driving range, and a reimagined downland course.
The result is a modern facility that challenges golfers of every level while offering a welcoming clubhouse and excellent practice amenities.
A Club with Big Plans
The redevelopment was a huge undertaking. Every green, tee, and bunker has been rebuilt, new irrigation lagoons installed, and a state-of-the-art greenkeepers’ compound constructed. Alongside the new 18-hole layout, the project also included a purpose-built clubhouse, driving range, and short game area.
General Manager David Green admits it was a demanding process but one designed with members in mind. Despite the disruption, the club managed to keep much of the course in play throughout.
First Impressions
The clubhouse sets the tone with its low-profile, contemporary design. The entrance offers a wide view of the course, while inside, the space feels light, open, and inviting.
There’s a large terrace overlooking the course — perfect for post-round drinks — and the restaurant offers high-quality dining with locally sourced ingredients. Practical features include plenty of parking, EV charging points, and flexible function rooms for social events.
The Course
Measuring 5,540 yards from the forward tees, the course feels spacious yet strategically demanding. Wide fairways give confidence, but water hazards, fescue, and well-placed bunkers keep you focused.
Some of the standout holes include:
- 5th (Par 3, 112 yards) – deceptively tricky with water in play
- 7th (Par 4, 237 yards) – short but requires precise positioning
- 13th (Par 4, 357 yards) – a blind approach into a hidden green
- 14th (Par 4, 281 yards) – a dramatic risk-and-reward dogleg over water
- 17th (Par 5, 435 yards) – a testing finish with danger on the right
The creeping bent greens — the first of their kind in Hampshire — ensure smooth putting surfaces, supported by an advanced irrigation system that will keep conditions consistent year-round.
Practice & Facilities
- Short Game Area – built to the same specification as the course greens, with a bunker and up to 50-yard chipping space
- Driving Range – equipped with TrackMan technology (final stages of completion)
- Swing Studio – indoor TrackMan space for lessons, fittings, or social golf
- Putting Green & Practice Nets – conveniently located near the first tee
The women’s changing facilities are modern, spacious, and well equipped, with showers, hairdryers, and plenty of room.
The Verdict
The transformation of Basingstoke Golf Club is remarkable. With its new course layout, superb facilities, and modern clubhouse, it’s set to become one of Hampshire’s most popular golfing destinations.
Easily accessible from the M3, it’s ideal for both members and visiting groups, whether you’re playing nine holes, a full 18, or hosting a golf day.
The official reopening is planned for May 2026 — and it’s one to put on your list.
